Ministry of Truth From Hell Created: While You Were Celebrating Christmas Obama Killed Freedom Of Speech?
While no one was paying attention on Christmas, U.S President Barack Obama used this situation to pass a very controversial law in the 2017 NDAA. The Countering Disinformation And Propaganda Act was signed into law by Barack Obama which many people say is the inception of the U.S military and governments own Ministry of Truth.
A 15-year-old girl was kicked out of a speech competition on Sunday for “propaganda” after delivering a winning speech on the rights of Palestinians and Muslims.
The Speak Out Challenge, the largest youth speaking event in the world, disqualified British-Palestinian Leanne Mohamad after receiving a complaint about her speech, which went viral after her regional win. In her speech, Mohamad described the onslaught against the rights of Palestinian children, who she said are accorded less protection than dogs. Her baby cousin, she said, passed away a few weeks ago because he was denied medical attention in the occupied territories.
She also widened her speech to attack Islamophobia, saying, “Islam is perfect, but I’m not. So if I make a mistake, you blame it on me, and not on my religion, because terrorism has no religion.” The complaint, according to the Jewish Chronicle, came from Edgar Davidson, who blogs against supposed anti-Israel bias in the United Kingdom and runs the satirical Free Palestine Now site.
“Why is it called a ‘Speak Out Challenge’ when I am then silenced?” Mohamad later tweeted, complaining of the litany of abuse she has faced on social media. “Absolutely appalled to receive such hateful messages from adults on Twitter. I’m 15 years old, you should be ashamed,” she tweeted.
The judging panel “unanimously” eliminated Mohamad from the final rounds because she ostensibly violated two rules, according the Speakers Trust, which trains students for the competition: “There are two fundamental rules that are made explicit during the training: the speech must have a positive and uplifting message—in fact this is one of the core terms of the agreement with the Jack Petchey Foundation (and) a speaker should never inflame or offend the audience or insult others and this, by definition, means that propaganda is ruled out absolutely from the outset,” the group said in a statement. Mohamad, who ended her speech by waving a Palestinian flag and calling for a “Free Palestine,” has since had her remarks removed from YouTube and the Speakers Trust website.
British-Palestinian schoolgirl expelled from public speaking competition
A British-Palestinian schoolgirl has been expelled from a public speaking competition after a video of her moving entry went viral last week.
Leanne Mohamad, a 15-year-old student at Wanstead High School in London, won a regional final of the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge with her speech ‘Birds not Bombs’, in which she describes the historical and contemporary reality for Palestinians under Israeli settler colonialism.
The Jack Petchey-sponsored competition is run by Speakers Trust, and bills itself as the world’s biggest youth speaking event.
Responding to complaints by anti-Palestinian blogger Edgar Davidson, Speakers Trust CEO Julie Holness said that they took his “concerns very seriously”, and confirmed that Mohamad would not be sent through to the next stage of the contest, and “will not be speaking at the Grand Final.”
The decision to expel Mohamad, made by a Speakers Trust and Jack Petchey Foundation judging panel, was based on her breaching two rules: that “the speech must have a positive and uplifting message”, and that “a speaker should never inflame or offend the audience or insult others.”
Holness offered to forward Davidson’s email to Mohamad’s school, and said the blogger was “welcome to use [my home office number] at any time.”
Responding to the news, Mohamad tweeted: “Why is it called a “Speak Out Challenge” when I am then silenced?” While Speakers Trust has removed the speech from their website and YouTube Channel, it has been re-uploaded here.
Davidson last year praised English Defence League-founder Tommy Robinson as “simply a British patriot.” His blog’s ‘Key Readings’ includes an article that states “Palestinians are a fake creation.”
The worldwide campaign against Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories, known as Boycott, Sanctions, and Divestment (BDS), is gaining a momentum and support from many nations across the world.
As the BDS pressure continues to mount, Israel is now feeling the heat from the movement’s growth. But because Israel is not ready to discontinue occupying the territories which are officially recognized internationally as lands belonging to the Palestinian people, Israel is now using different tactics to make sure that the momentum BDS has gathered, weakens.
This is not the first time BDS has been used by activists and countries to compel a nation to do what is generally accepted. In the 1980s, similar measures were instituted against the then apartheid government in South Africa. It ended up that the apartheid regime could not stand the worldwide pressure, allowing for political reforms in the country. Note that Israel was a strong supporter of the apartheid regime in South Africa.
Therefore, knowing what happened to the apartheid regime in South Africa, Israel is determined not to allow the BDS to continue functioning. To accomplish this goal, activists say Israel has resorted to the use of clandestine methods to ensure that it continue occupying the territories of the Palestinian people.
Already, there is a law in Israel that effectively banned any public call for a boycott:economic, cultural, or academic, against Israel or its West Bank settlements. This law was passed in 2011. Anybody who goes against this law is punished severely in Israel.
However, according to activists, what is more worrying about Israel’s actions against the BDS is the fact that pro-Israeli groups in the West are using their influence and money to manipulate politicians to pass laws. These laws will criminalize the BDS movement.
We are all aware that the UK recently announced that it will be illegal for “local city councils, public bodies, and even some university student unions … to refuse to buy goods and services from companies involved in the arms trade, fossil fuels, tobacco products, or Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.”
This announcement by the UK government means any entities that support or participate in the global boycott of Israeli settlements, will face severe penalties.
According to the Intercept, the United States also have similar bills like what the UK have passed; pending before congress and aimed at outlawing the BDS movement. In June 2015, the Washington Post reported that “A wave of anti-BDS legislation is sweeping across the US.”
An article that also appeared on the New York Times in 2015, mentioned that under a Customs Bill passed by both houses of Congress and headed to the White House, “American officials will be obligated to treat the settlements as part of Israel in future trade negotiations,” a provision specifically designed “to combat the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, a grass-roots campaign.”
Pro-Israeli groups in the United States are targeting people in academia who support the rights of the Palestinian people. The firing of Professor Steven Salaita by the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (UIUC) over his critical views on Israel is one example. As it was later revealed through a court order that pro-Israeli groups were behind his dismissal, UIUC ended up compensating Mr Salaita for close to $1 million.
Judging from all these developments in the West, activists conclude that Israel is using all ways and means to ensure that political dissent and free speech, which are core tenets of democracy are suppressed. Continuation of this act is to grossly abuse the rights of the Palestinian people.
